ARE YOU LOOKING TO REDUCE COSTS IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF YOUR INDUSTRIAL WAREHOUSES OR COLD STORAGE ROOMS?

Polyurethane PIR and PUR Sandwich Panels

Do you know the differences between these materials for this industry?

.

Polyurethane (PUR) is a thermoplastic polymer widely used in the sandwich panel industry due to its excellent thermal and acoustic insulation, mechanical strength, and ease of shaping.

Two main types of polyurethane are used in sandwich panels:
Polyisocyanurate (PIR) and rigid polyurethane (PUR).
The main difference between these two types of polyurethane lies in their flammability properties.

Polyurethane (PIR) is characterized by being a fire-resistant material, which means it is capable of resisting flame propagation and has low smoke generation. This makes it a popular choice for applications where a high degree of fire safety is required, such as in building construction and the naval industry.

On the other hand, polyurethane (PUR) is not a fire-resistant material and is more flammable than polyisocyanurate (PIR). This means it has a higher flame propagation rate and greater smoke generation in case of fire. For this reason, polyurethane (PUR) is primarily used in applications where fire safety is not a concern, such as in the manufacturing of panels for cold storage rooms.

In summary, the main differences between PIR and PUR are as follows:

FLAME RESISTANCE:
PIR: It is fire-resistant, which means it is not flammable.
PUR: It is not fire-resistant, which makes it recommended for cold storage rooms.

THERMAL PROPERTIES:
PIR remains stable in temperatures ranging from -200°C to 120°C.
PUR achieves thermal stability from -150°C to +80°C.

FIRE BEHAVIOR:
PIR has an advantage over PUR as it generates less smoke in case of fire.

MECHANICAL STRENGTH:
PIR has a 25% better resistance compared to PUR.

DURABILITY:
Both PIR and PUR offer an approximate lifespan of 10 years.
